Print problems

So, print is a problem this module, much more than any other module. Even though I had booked slots ahead of time to save myself the worry of drop in, even the booked slots are very busy and you can't always get what you want printed.. printed. I have a few more things I NEED to print, but feel I will have to sacrifice the stuff I would WANT to print. These are:

WANT
- the other two remaining typographic poetry covers
- the fold out posters for typographic poetry
- the LP sleeve for Syntax
- have the A HU double sided, James couldn't print them double sided so I thought I could photograph them to look double sided.

NEED
- A HU exhibition leaflet
- love typographic poetry poster

Post Lorenzo mini cirt,

A really good crit.

- overall comments on my brief was summarising the story that goes with them. I have all of the design work sorted, I now just need to picture how the brief sits within a story. How can I finish them effectively.

(e.g context/mock ups/ events etc)

We chatted about possible ideas relating to this, i.e packaging roll magazine, book covers context, not necessarily have to be within Waterstones, but if it were in any book store. More about the idea.

- DC book - good advice, perhaps categorising my book through the subjects as appose to the products (film, tv, book , music) . Also, perhaps to make it seem more like a 'scrap book', leave blank pages to annotate myself. Produce the cover myself etc...

- All of the briefs were substantial enough. Don't want to fall at the last hurdle.

BRIEFS

I haven't actually blogged my written, formal briefs, so here they are:

Feedback from crit,

15/03/12

A good crit again,

TIPS:

A HU - Think of name for exhibition? Explore stocks to distinguish exhibition branding and normal branding,

Penguin books - Keep illustration consistent, look at possible packaging box set, look at complimentary products for Cuckoo's nest.

TP - for poster experiment with typography, choosing one poem/extract from poem, spare page at back for reader to write own poetry, think about the cover and how it can be more considered, cover cut out to work as page fold that connects, Look at 'Faber & Faber'

Syntax - acetate sleeve working as second cover. vinyl - paper cover - acetate. gig promotion? posters in context. t shirt designs mock ups.

Roll - possible website? circle being main focus in centre, focusing on monthly circle but also an archive for previous magazines. spot varnish cover , circle on covers.

Post crit with Fred,

A good crit.

My top 5 briefs that I will exploit fully:

- Poetry publication
Different theme for each publication, experimenting with stock and typeface
poetry installation/space

- A HU
exploring type and colour? as appose to using her imagery alongside type, too much. I actually began this brief with the intent of using her colours and type but thought it wasn't enough. Exploring a white space for exhibition, really exploring her work.

- Roll magazine
experimentation of different processes to print covers, 12 covers, possible spot colour/emboss?

- Syntax
think of logo legibility, simplify album covers? how can I bring it across a range of products for concert/gig?

- Book cover
5 book covers for classic books, using clever illustration
window display (distribution)

- Film poster brief (for portfolio at the end)

TO DO:

- Poetry publication
40 poems written through experimental typography

- A HU
re brand/identify, using new concept. design an exhibition and promotional poster

- Roll magazine
test out different processes for the 'roll'

- Syntax
new logo, 5 album covers and complimentary products

- Book cover
research 4 more books and produce clever illustration for them. 5 book covers. window display and in store design for 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest' try design with cluster of eggs instead of nest.

Feedback from Si Scott

A HU brief
- prefer initial business cards with logo and info on back and block image on front
- prefer original designs to designs with border. Border designs look nice as a set but when given out individually not as nice?

Typographic poetry
- try translucent letters for TP logo
- play around with the cover layout, large letters
- try having the angled type line up against the fold

Roll photo mag
- prefer original, magazine format
- try die cut the hole and have the image on the inside page
- working with large images, could try to collage photos? depending on the image

Film posters
- if not a strong brief, produce them in your own time

Feedback from first crit,

General comments that were made on my boards:

"cool tintin layout, credit pt size looks too big"
"could be expanded to look at other book covers too"
"what films could you work with? Could you explore varieties of genre and decade?"
"work fits well within your SOI"
"Good range within briefs - varied content & focuses within the briefs"
"like the visual concept for the book cover"
"really like how al your publications/designs cover varying subject matters, e.g poetry, film etc...

Feedback given from discussion:

- Poetry Publication, treat the publication as a public book, work towards the advertising campaign?
- A HU, where is she? how can the identity be applied across a range of different work/exhibitions
- Roll magazine - how could the months be categorised? research into photographers subject matter

GENERALLY,
Research subject matter and push brief as far as possible.
